After reading the reviews I decided to pick this bag up instead of the smaller version, glad I did! Bag looks good, materials look and feel good, stitching looks rugged and overall it's a great little bag.

I was replacing my mil-tech brand assault pack, which looks like any basic military assault pack, but I wanted something a bit smaller. I bought this bag for running to work with my laptop and various gear, which it's well suited for. I easily fit my Dell XPS 13 (13" screen, 12" form factor) in the laptop sleeve, and I bet it'll fit a standard 15", even if it's a bit tight. Besides that I keep a smart phone, USB cords, laptop power supply, large logitech mouse, beats bluetooth head phones, a med kit and other junk. I could fit a change of cloths or a jacket as well if need be.

I wouldn't take this on a trip, unless I had a second backpack or duffel. My assault pack was great for that use being as expansive as it was, but I didn't want a bag that big for back and forth to work or the coffee shop. I also don't suggest this as a day hike pack. I use my Osprey day pack for hiking, it's far better suited for climbing than this bag. Walking around town may be fine, but I can already tell you that the bag will make my back hurt on a real hike (like a day hike up Mt. Monadnock or something).

Things I like:
The bag looks nice
Construction quality looks appropriate
Generally minimalist design
Curved shoulder straps are comfortable
Rubber bottom is a nice option
The bag stands on it's own, much better than flopping over

Constructive Criticism:
I'll agree with one of the reviews I read, two zipper pulls on the front pockets would be much better. You need to be conscious of what you're doing when opening the top small pocket, otherwise stuff will fall out. Not a deal breaker, but for future design considerations.

Cell phone pocket could be a little bigger, my Galaxy S5 with spigen case is a tight squeeze.

Side pockets fit a standard 100ml Nalgene. Again, it's a tight fit.

Carry handle could be longer, it's a little hard to grab with my big mits.

Bottom Line:
Great bag for my intended purpose. If you want a bag to fly, take on road trips or hike a trail, this is not your best bet. If you need a coffee shop bag for your smaller laptop, plus a handful of accessories, then this thing is great.

- The size works well for me.
- The material is heavier and stiffer than other brands.
- The straps and back are well padded, breathable, and comfortable.
- The water bottle pockets will hold my 2-inch diameter bottles.
- The pack can be used for airline carry-on.

It's a bit small for my preferences. My old backpack had four pockets instead of three and I kept so much stuff in it. I needed to cut down my inventory a bit to fit it all in here. In my old backpack I kept the following: a pencil case full of writing utensils, a set pan watercolors, a calculator, a toothbrush, a travel first aid kit, a bag of ibuprofen, a bus schedule, a survival guide booklet, two small plastic lizards, a phone, a wallet, a swiss army knife, a small rope, a magnifying glass, two spools of thread and a needle, feminine hygiene products, a large sketchbook, a novel, an ipad mini, a water bottle, an apple and or a granola bar, and all of my notebooks, textbooks, and binders for school.

I had to cut down to everything that was absolutely necessary for me. I made it work. It feels and looks great. I've had it for about a month now and it's held up perfectly so far (as to be expected). The tablet and laptop pockets are nice as well. I don't have a laptop yet but it seems like it will work well. The side pockets are sturdy and big enough to hold my 1000ml water bottle snugly. Like I said, it's a bit small for me but I like to keep a lot of crap in my backpack. For a normal human who doesn't carry two small plastic lizards and a set of watercolors with them constantly, it should work fine.

Awesome product (as it should be because it's Carhartt) . I spend a lot of time riding four wheelers and always carry around first aid kits and tow straps. My old bag was getting worn and torn apart. And I knew the company to go to. This this is bada**. Once I'm done riding and it's covered in my I pressure wash it and throw it in the dryer and it's as good as gold.

This backpack is great. I got it as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend, who is a plumber and has to carry a lot of tools and miscellaneous items to work every day. This is a perfect bag for work and/or travel, and it is sturdy and durable with many handy pockets and zippered compartments. I highly recommend this bag!

This backpack is truly wonderful. I am a graduate student and often bike to class. This backpack is able to hold my computer in sleeve, multiple notebooks, lunch box, and any other random items I need for the day. I love all of the different pockets to keep all of my belongings organized. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have 2 zippers on the front pockets - you need to be extra careful that nothing falls out. Also, the front straps are really wide which is uncomfortable if you are petite or busty. However, it seems that the straps are softening with use which is helping.

This backpack is of excellent quality. However I have 2 qualms with it. The first is that the top pouch is just a simple pouch and I needs a small divider or pocket inside to make it viable for me. The second is that the notebook sleeve inside is too short. I thought it would be able to hold a full sized notebook, but it can not.

Otherwise it is large inside so it will be useful for easy traveling.

I ordered this back pack hoping it would last thru high school. Teenage boys are rough on back packs. So far he loves it and it holding up well. I will update if we have any major tragedy before normal life expectancy time.

This is my second Carhartt backpack, only replaced because I lost my first one in a car fire. I have had a lot of backpacks in my life, from 5.11 and camelback tactical packs to Tom Bihn and Original Jansport bags. This backpack is extremely heavy duty, brass ykk zippers that have never failed. Bottle holders hold 1L capacity bottles with ease. This is by far the toughest backpack I’ve ever owned. I wish I had this nice of a bag in my school days. I would have only had to buy one instead of purchasing a new one every year.

This is a great backpack! I was a little disappointed because I thought it was going to be made of actual canvas, but this was not said in the listing, so I can't be mad! It seems very durable, and my boyfriend loved getting it as a gift. It has all kinds of different pockets inside to fit smaller items and laptops.
