I have been buying these gloves over the years for use with the wood burning oven in my bakery. We go through one cord of wood every 2 weeks, so you can say we handle quite a bit of wood. Before I found these gloves, we used to go through one pair of short leather hand gloves at a cost of around $5 every one to two months. These gloves can last about 5 to 6 months before we wear a hole in them, so I don't think they are that bad of a deal, and they have long cuffs versus the cheaper short hand gloves. For the customers who are complaining about them not suitable for handling high heat or open fire, I think they expect a bit too much for their money. We use them for handling red charcoal in a split second or high temperature such as the iron work around the fire, again for very short duration. So determine how you would use these gloves and decide whether they would work for your situation. There are fire proof gloves out there that can handle high heat for longer duration, but they cost much more than these, and they are not as durable.
I use these to handle an aggressive cat, on the advice of a vet. Teeth and nails have not managed to penetrate the leather, but it weren't really put to the test either as the cat really seemed to like being petted when I had these on. She's gentled down a lot now that I can handle her without fear, and I can now handle her without them most of the time.
I left them out for a day or so before I used them, as there was rather a strong smell when I first opened the package. This has faded, and presumably they now smell like the cat, judging from how much she likes them.
I bought these gloves for my husband in January. He chose these because they were recommended by Craig "Meathead" Goldwyn (amazingribs.com). He has been using them every weekend when he's in our backyard smoking or grilling. After prepping coals in his little chimney he can more easily transfer the hot coals into the smoker. He is only briefly scooting the hot coals into the smoker with his fingertips. Wearing these gloves makes it much easier and safer when handling the hot grills as he's scraping and cleaning them. He says they are light weight, comfortable and adequate for how he uses them. After 6 months of using them, they have held up very well. Will definitely order this exact same item again.
I've earned my share of burns along my forearm from grilling and smoking, and these have kept me from earning more. I bought them on the recommendation of Craig "Meathead" Goldwyn (amazingribs.com) and I've been very happy. The long cuff covers my forearm, the insulation works well and the dexterity of using your hands over a tool are perfect for me. Whether just adjusting dampers or moving glowing coals (still gotta be quick, they won't insulate forever), these have kept my hands and forearms comfortable and burn free.
Great gloves. They are exactly what I had hoped for.
