I really like this light. I'm in the HVAC trade, this light puts out a decent amount of light, where you need it and the best part is no cord. I like how the head swivels backwards. I used it a couple days ago while replacing a ductwork system in a house with a very low roof. It ran approximately three hours on a 2amp hour battery. I've also used it to change a blower motor on another unit in an attic. If I know I'm going to be in an attic or under a house for an extended period of time I'm taking this with me. I always have my head lamp on, but extra light is no brainer.
The light appears to be very rugged, the fit and feel is very much like my XR 20v impact driver. It has two brightness settings which helps to extend battery power. The pop-out rafter hanger is also a really nice feature. I like the semi-wide beam angle, it's just right for what I need. If your in the HVAC trade or just need a decent work light I think this is perfect solution and happy medium to the smaller Dewalt spot light and a corded work lamp.
The only thing that could've been better is if the lamp portion also articulated. That way you could fold the unit over then swiveled the LED section 90 degrees. Again, so far I've got nothing bad to say about this light. I works very well and I'm very glad to have it.
Good:
-Bright enough for what you pay for it
-Battery interchangeability with other DeWalt 20v tools
-Not terribly heavy
-You can put the belt clips on the bottom for more hanging options
-Battery life seems good
The only, sometimes very frustrating bad:
-The head that pivots does so too well, why they couldn't have added some sort of a lock to lock it in whatever position you need I will never know
For the $60 you pay for the bare tool with no batteries/charger I think it's a good deal. I've had it for a couple months, and I don't use it every day but when I do I use it it's all day long and I am not gentle with it.
Update: After a little over a year of using the DCL050 as a flashlight about twice daily for 10 minutes at a time, the top LED went out. The light was still usable and brighter than the alternatives with only 2 working LEDs, but I was not happy for that to happen with a premium product. I contacted DeWalt support and they said they would send me a replacement. The one downside was the item was backordered for ~2 months, but true to their word, the replacement arrived today and works great.
Original Review:
The area light serves as a phenomenal flashlight for supervising my dogs in the yard at night. The light is bright and consistent throughout a large central circular area without having to worry about blinding the dogs with a super-bright focused spot the way the spotlight model does. (However, the spotlight is also nice.)
This is miles ahead of the flashlight options offered by the sister Black&Decker brand. Well worth the extra cost.
I absolutely love this LED work light. It's a great addition to my Dewalt line of 20V tools, and the battery lasts forever. I used it for the first time for 4 hours and my battery is still showing full. I saw several complaints that the light was not bright enough. That is not the case. This light was made for people who have a need for a work light. It is great for mechanics, HVAC repair, Plumbing and jobs like that. IF the light were any brighter it would not work because it would reflect off the metal. I use mine primarily for mechanical work. I used to use a Streamlight at the lowest settings. With the Streamlight, at the highest settings you would get horrible glares and even at the lowest settings the glare could sometimes make it difficult to work. The Dewalt light is perfect and has a dimming option also. At this point i have absolutely no complaints, and if the light lasts as long as my other Dewalt products have then it will be well worth the money I spent to purchase it.
I'm a do it yourself homeowner with numerous to Dewalt 20 V tools. While this light is a little more expensive than I would've liked, it does offer a wide light dispersion when working in the dark environment. It is capable of lighting up the entire side of my house. I never have to worry about finding the right batteries as I have always had a supply of Dewalt 20 V batteries fully charged. Also, I live in Southern California and am concerned about earthquake preparedness, which this light more than adequately addresses.

This light works great for lighting up an attic or a dark room while doing electrical work. Only downfall is the light is a little "top heavy" even with a larger 3.0 battery when you tilt it back 45 degrees it falls over. Not the end of the world because this puts out a lot of great light to work from.
I have a good number of work lights and LED flashlights and I find that I use this more than the rest. It is more than bright enough for most of my uses and it really seems to be easy on batteries. I like the fact that it stands up nicely and doesn't tend to fall over. I often use it with a 20/60 Flex Volt battery and it is super stable with that heavy battery as a base. The flex head is neat for putting light where i want it and the lower setting lessons battery draw when yo need less light. I carry it in my Jeep when we go camping as it makes a great light to set up camp in the dark.
I could see buying a second one of these.
I have multiple Dewalt products. As such, I have lots of batteries. The worst thing about needing a light is when the battery is bad or it hasn't been charged. The nice thing about this light is all of my 20 V batteries fit right in and I always have power to spare
The LED is not the brightest in the world but then again this is in the searchlight. It's a work light.
A great hook for hanging when you needed.
Both high and low for the three LEDs gives great dispersant and more than enough light to see into every crevice. As I said, don't use it to find your way in the woods. It is a great light for working
Oh Yes, this light is quite useful in certain areas where light may be needed.. Long lasting run time as needed.
If I had one request it would be that the positioning adjuster was a bit more stronger.
To be fair.. I haven't gotten with dewalt to see if this can be adjusted. However, It's something that should be readily accessible if needed.
This is a great work light. It is bright and has a very wide light beam that really lights up whatever dark or dimly lit area you are working in. I've used it to help light up the room when changing out light switches in my house, but my favorite use has to be using it to help light up my work when I am sharpening the chain on my chainsaw. The light this thing puts out isn't hard on your eyes, in fact, it really helps me see the detail on every tooth of the saw chain. I have been using the light with 3Ah batteries and I haven't had an issue with the battery dying before I've been able to get my work done. I picked up a two pack of DeWalt Belt Clip/Hooks and put a belt clip on the light which has been handy. Overall this light is really solid, compact, and light weight compared to other larger battery powered work lights. I could see this light being handy for working on vehicles or even taking car camping.
