I used these for changing chainsaw chains and retensioning it. I have also found them to be the BEST glove for mechanical wood splitting (operating a splitter, not a maul). I used to wear leather gloves for wood splitting but I would wear the fingers out to holes before the season was over. These are less vulnerable to moisture penetrations and the kevlar doesn't wear appreciably from the woodwork.
Review Update: I go through 1-2 pairs of these a year. I started buying extra sets so I could switch to dry gloves when these get sodden. The new batch I bought are different from the old ones. The Kevlar on the palm seems thinner and smoother. The old ones had a rougher surface and a thicker appearance. I didn't notice the change until my hand took an impact that hurt more than usual wearing these. After a few more 'wth?' moments I examined the new gloves and saw the difference. I'm shopping heavy duty work gloves again.
one more note on wear : These gloves always wear a hole in the thumb below the top kevlar strip, in the soft, weaker material underneath. It might be specific to my work or work habits, but I thought it worth mentioning.
Bottom Line : When I find a better glove, I'm switching. Dropping review score by one point to reflect the design changes.
I have worked down range security contracts and own a small farm. I tore through other "high speed" gloves from Oakley and Blackhawk as well as leather and Mechanix types. All of these gloves would last about 6-8 work days on the farm. The Youngstown glove is now past the 30 work day mark and they are just getting broken in. I don't carve wood, shuck oysters or catch katana so I'm less worried about that type of puncture resistance. I have put my first pair through daunting paces fixing barbed wire fence, working on equipment and lots of chain sawing. Acids, bases, solvents and diesel. I set out to find the glove that could live up to my expectations and Youngstown Kevlar delivered.
Update: Day ~60 on the farm and time to put this pair out to pasture. These Youngstown Kevlar Gloves have served me better than any of the 60 to 80 pair (a dozen brands and types) of gloves I have worn out. I washed them in the washing machine 3 times. I have already bought 3 more pair including one "military" type
Great gloves, was a little surprised when I didn't cut my hand with a saw since I wasn't even a little bit expecting it to stop a saw. Glove finger caught the edge of wood and it was pulled into it and it. Stopped the saw entirely, finger was still intact thank goodness. Only a little bit bruised.
I use these very heavily and often in ways that are stupid (like gardening) and they are beasts. I've been wearing them out in three years and then buying a new one. I just bought another one. This time around I plan on not digging around in moist soil, which is perhaps the only chink in these gloves' armor, to see how many more years I can get out of them.
The articulation is very good, it feel more like a tight leather glove than a winter glove.
I tried gloves in this category before these but don't remember now what they were. A lot of it fell apart at the seams just sitting on the shelf. These are the real deal.
I ordered the Large size after measuring my hands with the sizing guide. As soon as I opened them - I knew they were going to be too small and I was right. I could get my hand inside the gloves - but there was no way I was going to close my fingers to grip anything. I will return this large size and get the XL size. They fit my petite wife almost good enough for her to keep them - but she doesn't use a chainsaw. The quality appears to be very good. Amazon return process is amazing and exactly the way it should be - thanks Amazon.

Description
Youngstown's General Utility lined with Kevlar is a heavy duty, all-purpose and rugged work glove designed to provide next level hand protection for those performing tough jobs. The outer glove is built similar to our top sellign General Utility Plus. It features extensive non-slip reinforcement to provide excellent grip and lasting durability. It also features a supportive cuff, padded knuckle and soft terry cloth thumb wipe. The interior of the glove is completely lined with Kevlar fiber. The Kevlar greatly increases the cut and puncture resistance of this glove. The result is a glove that is extremely versatile and it has found its way into a wide variety of applications where next level protection is required. Many use this glove in general construction, utility field work, landscape work or for gardening pros. The puncture resistance makes the glove great for handling brush or thorns and thistles without being slowed down or poked. The glove is machine washable and it is recommended to air dry them. This glove is available in sizes Small thru XXX-Large.
I bought these to use for cutting and chopping wood. I don't really expect them to save my fingers if I somehow forget how to chainsaw, but I figure any protection is better then nothing. These are ANSI rated for cut resistance, and in certain circumstances could certainly protect your hands somewhat from a slice. Apart from that I just needed decent utility gloves for when I was outside working with wood. I've used these to cut and chop about 3 cords of wood this season, and they lasted through it! Although I don't know if they'll make it through another 3 cord season - will have to see. I
only use these for handling wood when cutting, after cutting to chopping, and after chopping to stacking. That has caused a few small tears in the later on the fingertips and palm in that time. Nothing major, just through the outer layer of leather, more like it was just worn off. My only gripe with these gloves is I wish they had lasted longer before starting to show such wear, wood handling is a somewhat hand abusive task, but still fairly reasonable for a leather glove.
These have GREAT dexterity. I cannot stand gloves (even winter) that do not. These feel like an armored mechanix glove, a little beefy, but still a great tight fit. I used these all throughout a northern winter - with two thin glove liners on underneath them I was able to comfortably work down to 0° for 30 or so minutes at a time. With only one or none glove liners, I couldn't stand more then 5-10 minutes of splitting at that temperature without hands freezing/burning/going numb. They do have a winter version of this glove, you may want to look into it, or simply throw on some glove liners if you have them.
All in all it's a great glove. If it lasts me one more season I'll be satisfied enough to probably purchase again. If not, I'll be looking for something new/more durable.
I've used these for chainsawing and other woodcarving activities. I can't comment as to their ability to stop cuts or punctures, but I will say they handle heat well. I was doing a little bit of woodburning while wearing these and although I managed to melt the outside the inside didn't get so hot as to warn me my grip was a little too close. They seem to be quality and have held up very well in a few situations such as grabbing through wet wood full of nails with no consequences to my hands.
Updated below - the following here is my first impression review. Average gloves. I like the fact that they incorporate Kevlar into the fabric to prevent cuts. I used them once for some moderate chain saw wood cutting and branch breaking up. I wore them on a hot day for about 3 hours. Afterwards, they were shrunken, even tighter, and seemed as if they had been through a lot - which they hadn't. I will see but I don't anticipate these lasting a long time. Perhaps better to save your money, buy a cheaper pair and simply replace as needed. Two cheaper pair would cost about the same as these.
Here's a follow-up after over many months of use. These gloves DO hold up and are actually an excellent product. They appear, at first glance, to be of mediocre quality but my experience says otherwise. I'm very happy with these gloves and will buy them again.
I have regular hands for a woman, maybe slightly on the smaller side and the small fit me very well. I bought these gloves for shucking oysters and have only used them for that purpose.
They held up really well through all the shucking, even when I would accidentally slip with the oyster knife. Without these gloves, I'm pretty sure I would be more hesitant to enjoy fresh oysters. Even after a few stabbings, I don't see any signs of damage or wear on the gloves. However, I did notice that it was incredibly hard to clean them once they got wet. They are a little stinky from handling all the oysters.
I use these gloves to protect my hand while shucking oysters. Works well and keeps me cut-free while holding down oysters. Maybe not what they made this for.. but works like a charm.
If you do use it for oysters, I recommend using a disposable plastic food glove--it gets wet from the oyster juice so the glove helps slide your hand in and out in case you need to remove the glove.
